Pierre-Joseph Proudhon was the first person to proclaim themselves as an anarchist. Laying the foundations for revolutionary anarchism, he influenced Bakunin and Kropotkin along with workers across the globe. Yet American academic J. Salwyn Schapiro accused him of fascism. Here Schapiro’s many distortions and inventions are refuted, showing that Proudhon – for all his flaws, including misogyny – was a harbinger of anarchism.
